Abstract

Movies always influence and shape society based on the content of the message behind it. The messages or values contained in the movie can affect the audience. Joker 2019 is an earlier version of the Joker adaptation which tells the life of an Arthur Fleck before he became known as the Joker. Through this film, joker character is portrayed as the subject of an active narrative and carries a message for movie goers who are especially among students of Putra Indonesia Cianjur University. The topic of Joker 2019 is considered to attract the attention of researchers because so far the film has been widely discussed and is trending at the time getting many nominations and international awards such as the Academy Award, British Academy Film Award, Golden Globe Award, even Oscar and also influenced many very high audience enthusiasm. Based on this, researchers want to know how the character's construction means in the 2019 Joker film. This research is qualitative research using Roland Barthes's semiotic approach. There are stages for analyzing objects according to Barthes, i.e. denotation stages, connotation stages and myths. The results of this study show that joker film 2019 is a film that represents the meaning of his character which is often associated with negative things so as to have negative connotations by showing negative action in his film.
